Your ideal magazine cover

So what would be on the front of a magazine that would make you pick it up and go straight to the check-out? Is there anything you want to see covered in the Big Feature? Tips on subjects that you would like to learn? Let us know!

This is a very interesting question you posted here, but i'm afraid it's one without any definitive answer.
Firstly, may i just say you've done a pretty good job so far DP's covers were almost always intriguing but still pretty straight forward for what was inside to discover. Now from my perspective, a cover of a magazine such as yours should challenge the possible buyer. It should show a good quality image - anything somewhat popular like a good landscape, macro or portrait - but one that almost any reader could take if they read the content of the mag. So, yes, it should be a "PRO" shot, but not something out of this world so that it would be untouchable by the common reader/photographer.
This is why i said you did a pretty good job so far. The latest covers i remember related to my photo interests were doable landscapes/seascapes that were definitely linked to the season outside and while being really cool shots, with a little work and advice from the mag, one could take such, too.

Since i hope to have answered your question, may i pose one myself?
"What does an amateur photographer (such as myself, say)have to do to get on a cover of a magazine (such as yours)? (any advice would be welcomed!)

Hi,

I would love to see a cover showing a beautiful droplet and refraction photo. I have seen some amazing photos recently and some wonderful original concepts but have had great difficulty even on the internet getting some information on how to set up these beautiful shots and get the reflections in the right place. I admit I have spent a number of afternoons with some props and a bottle of glycerine but the only one that came out well was by luck ! I went back through the dp magazine and don't think it has been covered for a while ?. Finally, I think that it is the type of photography which everyone can experiment with at home so it would reach a wide audience.

As for your question Horia - the best thing to do is keep posting your work on the gallery and the forum, or send in a CD of cover-worthy images and address it to our lovely blacklisted_site Justine Ablett. They don't have to be hi-res, because Justine can request these later if need be. One thing to remember is that cover images HAVE to have space for the text to fit around it! The postal address is below:

Thanks Jodie, I have that issue and it;s really good. What I cant get is tips and experience for how to set up for example those beautiful leaf and macro shots so that whatever you want reflection in the droplet works !.

I think the magazine covers have been exceptional, better than the others on the market. One idea perhaps, as a bit of fun / something different, is to have a collage of various images from the gallery / previous issues? - not seen that before

I personally wouldn't want to see any celebrities on the cover. They're everywhere, it's nice to get a break from them and look through photography mags which are celeb free! lol.
