Faulty D2X. Your thoughts please

Postby Sputnik on Thu Dec 09, 2010 9:29 pm

Hi. I'm new here so please go easy on me.

I sent a Nikon D2X off to Nikon for an estimate as it is producing "pink" images. Admittedly, it's 4 years old and out of Nikon's warranty but as it has such a low shutter count, I expected a fair price. Needless to say I was horrified at the cost... £1400!!! OMG   After a lot of badgering Nikon they dropped the price to £600 (ish) which I thought was still ridicules for a "Professional Spec" camera. It will now go on ebay for parts

I would like your thoughts please? Want to know how low the shutter count is? I will let you know soon.

The price depends on what they need to replace, I've heard from people that replacing a bad shutter alone costs around 300-400USD. It may be more expensive if they need to replace a sensor or other components.

Can you post a sample image to show what you mean by 'pink' image?

As far as I know for Windows users:
If you want to measure the shutter count of Nikon cameras, take a photo in JPEG mode and use Opanda iExif. It displays the shutter count.

For Canon cameras, there is a free tool called EOSInfo. You need to connect your camera to computer for this tool. There is a separate tool for Mac users on the same site as EOSinfo.

Not sure for other brands

Crikey! Is it not just worth getting a used D2X body? You can pick them up for between £600 and £700.
I feel your pain!

Not sure which of your numbers is correct but if it's at the low end I have to agree with Rosie that if you really need it then a second hand one may be the answer. Failing which there are other newer generation Nikon digital cameras which will out perform the D2X that may be worth looking at instead. Such great pieces of kit as the D2X offer a variety of features but if you're not using them, why bother?

Hi, Not sure if you purchased the D2X from new. I know Nikon had a problem with the sensors on D2H and D2X cameras and were replacing them free of charge whether in warrantee or not. I know this as the same thing happened to my D2H about two years after I purchased it, I returned it to the shop from where I purchased it, they sent it off and I had it back three weeks later repaired free of charge. At the time it had only shot around 8oo accuations. Have a look on the Nikon website I'm sure it still say's something about it on there. By the way my D2H is still going strong after the repair, hope you have some luck getting it sorted.

Have a look at the following link from the Nikon website:
