online photography courses

Postby minimadme on Tue Jun 21, 2011 11:15 pm

Hello, I would love to study photography, however due to other commitments and the location I live going to college/uni to study photography is not possible at this time. So I have been looking around at online photography courses, they all seem to offer similar things but the price and time scale seems to vary dramatically! I was wondering if there are any questions i should be asking these companies or things i should be warned about? Or even better - if anyone has a course they can recommend to me?
thank you for reading

Now i'm not going to be much help with finding the right online course. However, one thing i will say is to get on as many photography forums as possible and start getting as much knowledge from the people on there as possible. You'd be surprised at how much you can learn, and the effort people are willing to go to in order to help someone new. There are also a large amount of online tutorials and mini courses for free, from videos on YouTube, to step by step guides on people's blogs.

I'm not saying don't go for a real course that will help you get going, but build on this knowledge with the mountain of stuff on the internet.

Try your local college as they sometimes do part time photography courses or even a photoshop course, or your adult learning centre might do a few short courses :)

Hi

I’m currently studying this course – http://www.inst.org/photography-courses/become.htm.

When I was looking around for potential distance learning courses I asked about the quality of the tutors, whether the course came with any accreditation, what the support was like and what sorts of assignments I had to complete.

Hi,

In addition to on-line training, another option would be to sign up for a local "photo safari", workshop or seminar in your city. Don't know where you live but most large metropolitan areas usually have something like this where local photographers take groups of students around the area to teach different subjects. For some other on-line resources take a look at http://www.photographyxfactor.com/ which has listings for various photography schools and other offerings. The Mentor Series also offers photography training and tours for all levels and have found them to be very helpful and informative. Hope this helps.

Well, the main benefit of the online photography courses comes with these online photography lessons is that they are very convenient. Seeing as how every single learning material will be delivered through the internet to you, it follows that you do not have to worry too much.

I also think it won't be that helpful if you won't have a hands on experience. It's more like reading articles for online courses.
